Day Seven: Baxter Springs, KS to Chandler, OK

We started our day with a breakfast of champions - hamburgers and fried green beans - at Waylan's KuKu Burger. We found out that we were actually very close (about 20 miles) from the Ghostlights phenomenon, but we didn't know so we missed the opportunity to drive out there the night before. People have been seeing an eerie light floating along in the woods since the 1800s and scientists aren't sure exactly what it is. Would have been cool to see.

Between Miami (pronounced My-AM-uh) and Afton, OK there is a 9 foot wide part of Rt. 66 called the Sidewalk Highway. You can see it in this picture, the pavement is down the center and the edges are gravel. It was a bit rough in the '46.

Classic sign - we did another 170 miles today, so a lot of our sightseeing was from the car.

This blue whale is in a little swimming pond across the road. You can't swim in the pond anymore, but we could just picture kids and families having a blast here back in the day.

Us at the Blue Whale stop.

This is an example of crazy spiderweb pods in the trees across Missouri and Oklahoma - some trees have 5 or 6 of these things. They are actually huge, like big enough to hold a small bird. We have never gotten close to one, but we constantly freak each other out on the road by pointing them out to each other.

We have passed a few old drive-in movie theaters - I read that this one was still open, but I guess the book was outdated. It would be fun to go to a drive-in movie in the car.

We stayed in a great old bungalow styely motel built in 1939. We hung out on our little bench and watched the sun go down with some champagne.

The neon sign at our motel.

We went to dinner at this random BBQ spot in town. It was very unassuming inside - kind of cafeteria style, but the food was incredible. Best meal yet on Rt. 66 at Papa's BBQ. The owner was super nice and Ryan had ribs and I had brisket with a side of tabouli. So, so good.

LOVE the whale. So wish that was in my backyard. Maybe someday I'll build one for myself! I love that you guys are having such an awesome trip: I'm impressed at all of the places you are stopping and all of the energy you are putting into learning about everything! Keep it up and have fun!
